The Kartini reactor was developed starting at the end of 1974 and operated in January 1979, one of the facilities possessed by the Center for Research of Pure Material and Instrumentation – BATAN Yogyakarta, a pool type reactor with a power of 100 kilowatts, designed for research, training and education purposes.

FOREWARD

The Kartini reactor is located in the Center for Research of Pure Material and Instrumentation – BATAN Yogyakarta. The location of this center is situated at Km 7 east of Yogyakarta, ± 500 meters entering in the north of the Yogyakarta – Solo road. This place is included in the area of the Regency of Sleman, District of Depok, Sub-District of Catur Tunggal. The area of this center including its development is about ± 12 hectares.

The Kartini reactor was developed starting at the end of 1974. The implementer of the whole development was handled by experts of BATAN whereas in its implementation this was conducted by a group mentioned as the Reactor Development Team which formed in accordance to Letter of Decision of the Director General of BATAN No. 119/DJ/13/XI/1974 dated 13th November 1974.

The Kartini reactor reached its criticality condition for the first time on Thursday, 25th January 1979 at 17.40 hours, and officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia on the date of 1st March 1979.

The reactor operation has been conducted at a power level of 100 watts.

The Kartini Reactor is located in the Province of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, which is one of the facilities possessed by the Center for Accelerator Science and Technology – The National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN). Development of this facility started in the year 1974 and the first time in operation in the year 1979. The Kartini Reactor is a research reactor of the TRIGA type (Training, Research, Isotope production/Irradiation General Atomic) with the design as a pool type reactor of 250 kW with an operation power of 100 kW. The Kartini Reactor is utilized for Research, Irradiation, Education and Training purposes.

The development of the Kartini reactor started at the end of 1974. The whole implementation of development was handled by Indonesian experts, in this case by BATAN, whereas in the implementation a group was given the duty for its implementation and called the Reactor Development Team which was formed in accordance to the Letter of Decision of the Director General of BATAN No. 119/DJ/13/XI/1974 dated 13 November 1974. The Kartini reactor had reached its first criticality condition on Thursday 25th January 1979 at 17:40 hours, and inaugurated on 1st March 1979 by the President of the Republic of Indonesia which was Mr. Soeharto at that time. The main function is for research, irradiation, education and training of cadres in the reactor field. The operation was conducted at a power level of 100 kW.

The Multi Purpose Reactor was designed and developed by Interatom GMBH from the Federal Republic of Germany. The civil works and physical facilitation was worked upon by domestic contractors. The development of the multi-purpose reactor had taken four years, including the excavation phase of the building in the month of May 1983 until reactor criticality in the month of July 1987. Finally in the month of March 1992, a full power operation of 30 MW of the reactor was achieved.

In its day to day operation the GA Siwabessy Multi-Purpose Reactor is run at a capacity of 15 MW for efficiency purposes. This capacity is adequate for research activities, isotope production for the field of industry up to health, tests as well as material testing, science trials/experiments, etc.

Nuclear Facility - TRIGA Reactor "Nuclear activities in Indonesia have increased with the operation of the research reactors in Bandung, Yogyakarta and Serpong."

The condition of criticality was reached on 16th October 1964 at 18.37 hours. The experiment was led by Djali Ahimsa and Soetarjo Soepadi as the main operator with guidance and supervision of Dr Wittemore.

On Saturday dated 20th February 1965, President Soekarno inaugurated the establishment of the Bandung Reactor Center of BATAN with a Triga Mark II reactor which operated on a power level of 250 kw.
