The Second Edition of the Indonesia Language Large Dictionary mentions that radiation is the emission and electromagnetic wave movement that brings energy through space or intermediary, for example emission and electromagnetic wave movement, sound waves; elastic waves; light rays. Therefore it could be, mentioned that radiation is not only nuclear radiation, but also other radiation like radio waves, television waves, the sun’s rays, etc.

Many studies, including one that was recently made by the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD (OECD/NEA) and IAEA, show that the nuclear power installation in a large part of the countries are very competitive if compared economically with other types of energy. Besides that the use of nuclear energy has considered the ratio with alternatives from the angle of funding, performance and reliability, dependency of the fluctuations in availability and price of suppliers, as well as the impact to environment and health.

The development of NPP needs a large investment cost, but at the time of operation of NPP it would only need cost of fuel which is far lower compared to other generating plants. This is because of the nuclear fuel which is compact and has energy content much greater compared to fossil fuels or oil. This low cost fuel has made that the cost of the production of electricity of NPP competitive towards other generating plants, as well as more stable because it is not vulnerable towards changes of fuel prices in the world.

For almost half a century the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has coordinated international nuclear cooperation. During that time also the world has felt the benefit of nuclear in various fields, like health, energy, food, and industry. In the future the role of nuclear is believed to become more important in overcoming the challenges in fulfilling the main needs of the human being, meanwhile the budget policy is strict which is being applied to IAEA during this era causing the lack of resources needed.

The challenges in the year 2020 which is already anticipated by IAEA are:
the growth in utilization of nuclear for electricity generation which driven by the need of clean energy; increase in the utilization of nuclear in the field health, food and environment; demand on the higher level of security and safety; reduce threat of nuclear terrorism; and strengthening of the safeguard system to ensure effectiveness, credibility and independency.

Naturally, in our bones there is radioactive polonium and radioactive radium. The understanding of radioactive itself is the characteristics of a substance that could emit radiation rays because of the condition of that substance which is not stable. Our muscles contain radioactive carbon and radioactive potassium, and in our lungs there is radioactive noble gas and tritium.

These substances and many other substances continually emit radiation and light our bodies from within. Besides that, we are also exposed to the radiation rays form within by all natural and artificial radioactive substances which we eat and drink every day.

If a person, after receiving radiation with medium dose, experiences signs of sickness, thkis is not because of radiation but the sense of being afraid towards radiation

Before we discuss this, let us get two basic matters straight :

  1. Biological Impact due to high radiation dose is already very much known:
    Very high radiation dose, as much as 100,000 mSv, will kill instantly. A dose of 10,000 mSv probably would kill also but after several days or weeks. The radiation dose of about 1000 mSv maybe will give temporary symptoms, but there is no direct risk to the health.
  2. The biological impact because of low radiation dose is not very much known:
    The biological impact because of low dose almost does not exist, even an in depth research does not reveal anything. Because of that, we have to use theoretical models to evaluate the damaging influences. And there are many risk models.
